5 THINGS: It’s STILL Too Hot Out

heat wave make steve brain melty melt.

Here are the (more than) Five Things for Thursday, June 21, 2012:

Jeeves, gas up the boat! The South County 12-meter regatta is today, running from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Viewing spots will be wonderful from all along Ocean Road, and Veterans and Gazebo parks. The Towers is also hosting a viewing from its supreme vantage point. For more info on the event, click , and for more info about the Towers’ viewing, click .

Celebrate Welcome House with strawberries. The Strawberry Social is from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wakefield Baptist Church. It’s the 25th year for the Welcome House, unfortunately – they wish the problem was eradicated already, after all. For more info, click .

You’re playing soccer in the summer, so really, you should expect this kind of weather. Tryouts for the Rams FC premier soccer club are today, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information, click here.

It is very, very hot and very, very muggy today. As a result, the Department of Environmental Management has issued an ozone alert. Heck, it’s already 73 degrees out as I type this near 6 a.m. Temperatures are expected to get into the upper 90s today, which sounds… just awful. DEM has nine tips for staying healthy, which are readable here, and RIPTA lines are free today.

Don’t leave animals unattended in cars! That’s the warning message from Art Smith, an animal control officer with Narragansett police. He said vehicles can average 30 to 40 degrees hotter than the outside temperature, and they are a grave concern for animals. There are ordinances against leaving animals unattended in cars, so don’t do it!

Note: Not about old phones. The Rotary Club of Wakefield meets at Liliana’s Italian Restaurant at 12:15 p.m. today. For more information, click .

Blogging, events, letters, what more could you want? Many people often ask me, “Hey are you the Patch guy?” And the answer is yes, yes I am. Then, most often they want to know how they can get things on the site. Let me present you with three options:

  • The easiest way for me is if you use our blog form. If you have a user account, congrats! You can submit directly to our queue by going here. For more info on blogging, go here.
  • If you think your item is more appropriate for the events calendar, that's a simple enough process as well. Go here, and then hit the “Add An Event” button at the bottom of the page. (Note: You might want to search for your event first, since we do have a calendar editor that adds things on her own awesome initiative.)
  • Finally, do you need some input before posting? Or do you have a release that is more of a traditional “letter to the editor” thing? Fine then – send it along to me, either at stephen.greenwell@patch.com or narragansett@patch.com.

Dick Clark (RIP) was probably talking about what a hip and slammin’ invention it was. On this day in 1948, Columbia Records introduced the long-playing record album, more commonly known as the LP.

Having you to complain about makes Saturday Night Live more relevant. Happy 26th birthday to Lana Del Rey.
