Highly Anticipated Tennis Match Canceled

South Kingstown High boys' tennis team's rematch with Barrington High postponed, along with games for the SK baseball and softball teams.

The much anticipated rematch between the South Kingstown High boys’ tennis team and undefeated Barrington High scheduled for Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. was canceled today due to rain.

“We had to cancel at 10 after three, it was dry for five hours today,” South Kingstown high head coach Andy Carr said.  “I said it before we even started, we can’t control the weather, it could rain in 20 minutes and it did.”

Widely regarded as the two best teams in the state this season, the Eagles handed the Rebels their only loss of the season April 18th at Barrington High School.

was also the first time the Rebels had lost a regular season match in four years.

“We’re disappointed, we all wanted to play, they were looking forward to it, Barrington was looking forward to it, but we can’t control the weather,” Carr said.

When the match is finally played will also be at the mercy of Mother Nature, but the two squads will try to make it up as soon as possible.

“We’ll reschedule for tomorrow and see what happens,” Carr said.  “If not tomorrow then it might have to get pushed until next Monday, because they [Barrington] have a prom on Friday.”

This also comes with the territory of the spring sports season, as often the schedule is tentative at best given the amount of rain that comes in accordance with this time of the year.

“Last year was probably the best year we’ve had in 10 years (in terms of weather), this year is probably the worst we’ve had in 10 years with the wind, the cold and the rain,” Carr said.  “It’s disappointing, but like I said there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Tennis was not the only local sporting event rained out on Tuesday, as the following games were also postponed or canceled as of 4:30 p.m.

Softball: The Prout School @ South Kingstown at the Broad Rock Playfields, 6 p.m.  Rescheduled for Monday, May 23rd at 6 p.m.

Baseball: South Kingstown High @ Tiverton High at Tiverton High School, 3:30 p.m.  Rescheduled for Monday, May 23rd at 3:30 p.m.
