URI Pharmacy, WKES Host Health Fair

The event educated more than 300 elementary school student about safe living and eating habits.

The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and West Kingston Elementary School collaborated to provide a Health and Wellness Day at the elementary school for about 300 in late April. 

As a continuing part of pediatric outreach at the College of Pharmacy, led by Kelly Matson and K. Kelly Orr, URI Clinical Associate Professors of Pharmacy Practice, 28 pharmacy students provided education and hands-on activities on topics including nutrition, dance and exercise, poison prevention, medication safety, asthma, diabetes, summer safety, hand hygiene and smoking prevention. 

Additionally, children participated in many other educational and healthy activities provided by Officer Chappell from the South Kingstown Police Department, Assistant Fire Marshall Chris Hiener from the Union Fire District, Cottrell Homestead with Rhody Fresh Milk, Ichiban Karate Studio, the W.E. Stedman bicycle shop, the American Heart Association, the Shields family, Wayne Carroll and the West Kingston PTO.
