Pier School Wrestling: Home Match A Success, States This Weekend

After a successful home match, the first in more than a decade, three Pier School wrestlers are competing in the middle school states in Cumberland this weekend.

Narragansett Pier School wrestlers Cole McGill, James Sauro and Chris Storti will be competing in the middle school state wrestling tournament this Saturday and Sunday at Cumberland High School.

All three are among the favorites to win individual state titles at their weight classes – 89 pounds for McGill, 140 pounds for Sauro and 170 for Storti. Sauro won a , and Storti was a runner-up.

According to Pier School head coach Mike Millen:

McGill is No. 1 seed in Division II at 89 pounds, and has an 8-0 league record, despite being just a sixth grader in his first year of middle school competition. He will have a tough quarterfinal and semifinal matches in order to make the finals.

Sauro is No. 1 seed in Division II at 140 pounds, with a 6-0 league record. He is in eighth grade and a returning state champion, although he wrestled at 119 last year.

Storti is 8-0 in league matches, and Millen said other coaches refer to him as “a man among boys” and one of the best in New England at his weight. Last year, he finished second in the 170-pound weight class, which is the class he will compete in this year as well.

Matches start at 10 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Pier School Home Meet a Success

On Wednesday, the Pier School had its first home match in more than a decade, forming a doubleheader with the high school wrestling team. The Mariners combined with Curtis Corner and Chariho to form a team to take on McCourt Middle School of Cumberland in a friendly exhibition.

Since it was an exhibition, several wrestlers competed out of their weight classes. McGill took on 96-pound eighth grader Pat Eddy, losing via pin in the second period.

However, the Mariners won their two other matches. Sauro pinned Steve Mamno in 2:28, and Storti pinned Matt McKenna in 43 seconds.

McCourt won the exhibition 60-36. Millen said they are probably one of the top three teams in the state, and in the hunt for the state title this weekend.
