NHS Baseball Falls Short vs. Rogers

Khalil Moon strikes out eight in four innings for the Vikings, and Narragansett struggles in the field.

NARRAGANSETT – Led by starting pitcher Khalil Moon, the Rogers High School Vikings manage to muffle the Narragansett bats for the first four innings, before holding on in the final three for a 4-2 win Friday afternoon at Sprague Park.

Moon struck out eight Mariners in four innings of work to earn the win. Trevor Morgera allowed a run, two hits and two walks, but he stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.

Narragansett went into the final inning down 4-1, and were quickly down to their final out after flies to center field by Austin Butler and Nich Schone. However, Kullen McGill kept the game alive by lining a hit to left.

After that, Rogers almost gifted the game to the Mariners. Adam Gabrilowitz walked on five pitches, and Jimmy Kershaw reached base on an error. Zach McKanna “drove in” a run with a patient batting eye, walking on five pitches.

But with the tying run on third and the winning run on second, Jared Baptista grounded out sharply to the second baseman. Baptista was a tough 0-for-3 on the day, hitting three balls hard but at fielders.

Rogers got two runs in the third and one run in the sixth off starting Narragansett pitcher Mike Herchen. The senior pitched to contact, as he didn’t strike out a single batter, but all three of his runs were unearned, coming on an error by the shortstop and a wild pitch by his replacement, Gabrilowitz.

Gabrilowitz relieved Herchen in the sixth with one out, but he struggled with his control, walking the first three batters he faced. He settled down to strike out Devin Johnson, walked Colin Chase, and then got a long fly out from Mike O’Connell to end the inning.

However, Gabrilowitz struck out the side in the top of the seventh.
