5 THINGS: Mmm!

Here are the Five Things for Friday, February 3, 2012, and the weekend:

Mmm, pasta! I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but running a hockey program sure is expensive. You essentially have to book ice time at rinks across the state, never mind all of the various equipment you need to buy. So, if you’re looking to pitch in, and want to fill up your stomach in the process, check out the hockey team’s pasta dinner tonight at the . The doors open at 6 p.m., and the cost is $10. There are a variety of raffles being held as well, with the top prize $200 cash.

Mmm, Narragansett sports! The girls’ basketball team (12-3, 10-1 Division II-South) will look to rebound (ha ha, get it?) from their first Division II loss of the season by winning tonight against the Tiverton Tigers (7-8, 6-7 Division II-South). Tip-off is at 7 p.m., with junior varsity at 5:15 p.m. Other sports in action this weekend:

• Wrestling is competing at Smithfield High School in the Smithfield Invitational tournament. Matches start at 9:30 a.m. In their most recent match, the Mariners (9-7, 9-4 Division II-South) swept Mount Pleasant (0-12, 0-12 Division II-South) by a score of 75-0 on Thursday.
• The girls’ ice hockey co-op (5-8-1, 5-8 DeCosta) travels to the Adelard Arena to take on North Smithfield (3-7-1, 3-7-1 DeCosta) at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the team takes on the Warwick co-op (8-5, 7-4 DeCosta) at 1 p.m. at Providence College’s Schneider Ice Rink. In action Thursday, the girls lost 4-0 to the Cranston co-op (5-5-1, 5-5-1 DeCosta).
• The boys’ ice hockey team (1-12, 0-12 Division II-South) takes on South Kingstown (5-4-2, 4-4-2 Division II-South) at the University of Rhode Island’s Boss Ice Arena at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
• The girls’ indoor track team (1-8, 1-8 Division II Sullivan) will compete in the Sullivan Division championship. The team is to be determined according to the RIIL, but the meet takes place at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.
• Cheerleading continues its season Saturday at Portsmouth High School, in a competition meet. Routines start at 10 a.m.
• The boys’ basketball team is off. On Thursday, the Mariners lost 59-47 at Rogers High School in Newport. Narragansett is 8-9 overall, and 6-7 in Division II-South. The Mariners are right on the bubble for the state tournament as a result – they currently have the 24th seed out of 32 teams, but must finish above .400 to qualify.

Mmm, Prout sports! The Prout sports schedule is a bit lighter this weekend as compared to the Mariners.

• The boys’ basketball team (15-2, 12-0 Division III) hosts Johnston (11-6, 9-3 Division III) at 7 p.m. Junior varsity is at 5:15 p.m. In their last game, the Crusaders beat Davies (1-12, 1-9 Division III) handily, 70-38, on Tuesday. The Crusaders currently have 7.2 seeding points for the state tournament, and are in a three-way tie for the ninth seed.
• The girls’ basketball team (10-6, 6-5 Division II-South) travels to Rogers High School (13-2, 11-1 Division II-South) in Newport for a 7:30 p.m. game with the Vikings. (Lady Vikings? Heck, I’m not sure.) Junior varsity is at 5:45 p.m. Prout last played on Tuesday, beating Johnston (8-6, 8-3 Division II-North), 52-41.
• The boys’ hockey team (11-2-2, 10-2-2 Division II-South) takes on Middletown (9-3-2, 8-2-2 Division II-South) at St. George’s School 6 p.m. Saturday.

Mmm, scenic walks! There will be a guided walk at Canonchet Farm this weekend, at 1 p.m. Sunday. For more info on the event, click . Friends of Canonchet Farm president and arborist Tom Fortier will lead the walk from behind the aforementioned Narragansett Community Center. The event ends around 3 p.m.

Mmm, money! According to some random page on the Internet, the first paper money in America was issued in Massachusetts on this day in 1690. And if I know one things, it’s that the Internet never lies.
