A Rhode Island view like no other – Research Vessel Endeavor

I've been swimming at Bay Campus since I was a kid. I'm not sure when I remember seeing the Endeavor for the first time, but it has always interested me. I see so many boats moored in the bay, floating in the same spot day after day. Not the Endeavor, she's there one day and gone the next.

Even when docked she doesn't rest. Operated by the University of Rhode Island graduate school of Oceanography, The Endeavor is a scientific research vessel that travels the world on government-sponsored expeditions. As I sit on the Bay Campus beach and watch the Endeavor's crew prepare for her for the next mission, I imagine the views of the Galápagos Islands from the Endeavor's deck and wonder if they have Tautaug there?

After a months of logistics, schedule conflicts, and injuries due to Hurricane Sandy, my request to visit the Endeavor and draw on location was scheduled! So after running The Matty Fund 5k at URI earlier that morning - I grabbed my pen and clipboard and made my way back to the beach, but this time the Endeavor will be under my feet.

It was a hot day to say the least. Getting sun burn never felt better because I finally illustrated the Endeavor, a view of Rhode Island like no other.

The images shown are from the series of on location illustrations from my visit to the Endeavor on June 8, 2013. The set of line drawings where drawn on location with ink on paper. The final digital collage piece was made from multiple reference photos taken through out the day.
