A Bad Case of Inertia

Inertia – also known as the “I shoulds…” and I got it bad.

I should go through the papers in my “too hard to do” pile today. Let me put that on my list. I should write another entry for my blog. I’ll add that to my list. Maybe I could create a cooking class for my business. Yep, that goes on the list.

What have I accomplished? I can truly say that I am a champion list maker.

Sound familiar?

I have been suffering from inertia for over a month now. It can be a very powerful force. Remember Newton’s first Law of Motion – a body at rest tends to stay at rest, unless acted on by an external force.  I find myself in dire need of an “external force”.

There are so many things I want to do, and yet I do none of it. Oh I manage the basics each day. I get through work, do the shopping and cooking, walk the dog. But it’s the other things, the things that would make me feel happy and productive if I did them, that don’t seem to get done.

The whiney voice in my head says, “I have no time to do what I want to do”. The logical voice in my head counters with, “Really? Everybody has 24 hours each day, last time I checked”.

So two things happened.

First, my much needed “external force” manifested as the logical voice in my head, the one that had apparently had enough of my whining. It said, “Geez, just do SOMETHING!”

Second, I took a critical look at how I spend my free time during each day. I realized that I waste a lot of time with insignificant nonsense.  I really should delete that card game from my computer…

I”ve emerged from my inert state. I do at least one thing every day from my happy list, the menu of things that will bring me joy when I do them. And I am happier! Baby steps, I tell myself.

So if any of this sounds like you, remember that there is hope. There’s always a light to guide you out of the hole if you just look up.

I invite you to take the advice of my logical voice.

Just do something.
