5 THINGS: Debating, Haunted Courthouse and Van Halen

As usual, three things that completely go together in today’s Five Things.

Here are the (more than) Five Things for Wednesday, October 10, 2012:

“Acting is all about honesty. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” – George Burns. The Contemporary Theater Company hosts acting lessons at 5 p.m. The cost is $10.

oooo SPOOKY! The Haunted Courthouse opens at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10.

“Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels.” – Frank and Ernest. There will be ballroom dancing lessons at the Towers at 6 p.m. The cost is $15.

Stories are wonderful and magical. There is storytime for 3 to 5-year-olds at the Peace Dale Library at 10:30 a.m.

“The only difference between a tax man and a taxidermist is that the taxidermist leaves the skin.” – Mark Twain. Here are today’s government meetings:

  • The League of Women Voters hosts another “Meet the Candidates” forum at Narragansett Town Hall at 6 p.m. For more info, click here.
  • There are no meetings scheduled for South Kingstown for Wednesday. Please do your best to celebrate as a result.

Oh no! Maybe there seriously aren’t that many events today, given that it’s Finnish Literature Day. As a result, our events calendar for today is a bit barren. If you’re having an event, please let us know in the comments. Also, make sure it isn’t left out in the future – Submit it via this link (as long as you’re logged into your Patch account).

Sign up for our daily newsletter! Hey, I realize we have a lot of neat features and knick-knacks on the site, so it can be confusing to keep up with it all. Want just one simple, easy to read daily digest? Sign up for our e-mail newsletter here then. It comes out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. roughly, every single day of the week. Amazing, I know!

Uh, whoops – I guess that segregation thing wasn’t working out so well. On this day in 1957, Komla Agbeli Gbedemah was denied service at a Howard Johnson’s. By the way, he was the finance minister of Ghana at the time. The joke was on HoJo’s though, since Gbedemah lived to 1998, well-past the expiration date for most of their restaurants. (This Howard Johnson probably had no comment though.)

JUMP! … wait don’t! Happy 58th birthday to Diamond Dave, a.k.a. David Lee Roth. p.s. Van Halen is awesome. (Side note: “Fred Astaire” is in the default Microsoft Word dictionary, but not “Van Halen.” What scoundrels.)
