SK Police Log: June 16 and 17, 2012

A Wakefield man waffles on taking field sobriety tests, and a YMCA lifeguard is charged with possession of marijuana.

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the South Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

North Kingstown Man Charged With Driving While Intoxicated

Krist McLaughlin, 37, of 60 Second St., North Kingstown, was arrested at about 1:19 a.m. on June 16 and charged with driving while intoxicated and cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, a Jeep Wrangler driven by McLaughlin cut off an officer while making a turn on to Pershing Avenue. A traffic stop was made on Pershing.

Police said when speaking to McLaughlin, the smell of alcohol was strong. When asked to submit to field sobriety tests, police said McLaughlin refused, and he was arrested at that time.

Police noted that after being arrested, McLaughlin told police he now wanted to take the field sobriety tests. Police said McLaughlin failed these tests, and he was transported to headquarters for processing.

Warwick Man Charged With Domestic Assault

Michael J. Giard, 41, of 259 Diamond Hill Road, Warwick, was arrested at about 3:30 a.m. on June 16 and charged with domestic assault.

According to police, they received a report of an assault at a home on White Birch Trail involving Giard and a woman. The woman told police that she and Giard had gotten into an argument about his text messages, and he had held her head on the ground, and then threw her into a doorway.

Police said Giard did not wish to make a statement – He told police that he first wanted to get a witness from a local bar that had seen the victim punch him earlier that week, and that he also wanted to speak to his lawyer. He was arrested, processed and released at about 10:30 a.m.

Wakefield Woman Charged With Obstruction, Resisting Arrest

Theresa M. Benoit, 40, of 491 Broad Rock Road, Wakefield, was arrested at about 11:37 p.m. on June 16 and charged with obstruction and resisting arrest.

According to police, a dispatcher received a report from a woman that her husband had assaulted her at a Broad Rock Road home. Police responded to the address given by the woman, but noted that there didn’t seem to be any signs of a disturbance.

Police said that Benoit was at the house, and appeared to be highly intoxicated. When asked about the incident, she pointed to her husband and said, “I want to hear what he has to say.”

According to police, they asked Benoit multiple times to move outside so that they could interview her independently of her husband, but she refused to comply.

Police said that Benoit continued to refuse to answer questions, and she was eventually arrested and charged with obstruction and resisting arrest. She was processed and released at about 3:45 a.m.

South Kingstown Man Charged With Possession of Marijuana

Brandon J. Sweet, 20, of 59 Schooner Drive, South Kingstown, was arrested at about 12:05 a.m. on June 16 and charged with possession of marijuana. Police said Sweet is a lifeguard at the YMCA.

According to police, officers patrolling Green Hill Ocean Drive noted a blue Mazda parked in a private lot. Police said when they talked to the occupants of the car, there was an overwhelming smell of marijuana.

Police said when they asked Sweet about the smell, he said he and the passengers had been smoking, and there was more marijuana in the car. According to police, a search of the car revealed several small bags of marijuana.

Sweet was arrested, processed and then released at about 1:29 a.m.

Coventry Man Arrested for Warrant

Pedro A. Torres, 32, of 311 Lacale Drive, Coventry, was arrested at about 6:11 p.m. on June 16. Police said a Sixth Division District Court warrant was out for his arrest for failing to appear at a court hearing related to a Providence police charge of drunken driving, second offense.

According to police, officers familiar with Torres from past arrests saw him on Main Street. Police said he was arrested without incident, processed and released at 10:20 p.m. after posting bail.

SK Woman Charged With Driving With A Suspended License

Jessica F. Brown, 22, of 422 Main St., Apt. #C4, South Kingstown, was arrested at about 1 p.m. on June 16 and charged with driving with a suspended license.

According to police, an officer traveling on Allen Avenue near South Road saw a car take a left-hand turn on to South Road without signaling. A traffic stop was made on South Road.

Police said a background check of the driver – Brown – revealed that her license had been suspended. Police allowed her to park her car at her home, and then transported her to headquarters for processing. She was released at about 1:59 p.m.

Wakefield Man Cited for Expired License

Michael R. Cabral, 54, of 466 Curtis Corner Road, Wakefield, was cited at about 7:51 a.m. on June 17 and charged with driving with an expired license.

According to police, an officer traveling on Tower Hill Road behind a car driven by Cabral noted that the passenger side brake light was out. A traffic stop was made on Rose Hill Road.

A background check revealed that Cabral’s license expired in February 2011. He was cited and allowed to drive from the scene.
