Richard P. Gladding, 21, of 5 Jennifer Ct., Narragansett, was charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test on Aug. 6 after getting in an accident at the corner of Route 1 and Spartina Cove Way. Gladding reportedly attempted to pass another car on the left, but clipped the rear bumper, forcing the driver off the road and causing the accident.

Officers arrived at the scene to find Gladding’s BMW disabled in the center median with heavy damage and Gladding sitting on the ground against the car. He was reportedly unable to tell officers what had happened and repeatedly put his hands in his pockets. Each time he was instructed to remove his hands from his pockets — on five separate occasions — Gladding reportedly raised his arms over his head with his palms out before putting them back in his pockets.

After officers reportedly smelled alcohol on his breath, Gladding allegedly admitted to drinking “three strawberry beers” that night. He was reportedly unable to count backwards from 24 properly and allegedly failed three other field sobriety tests. Officers charged him with DUI and brought him to the police station, where he allegedly refused a Breathalyzer test.
