Crooked Narragansett/S. Kingstown Senator Going to Prison

Patrick McDonald stole $163,000 from law clients and used it on hotels and restaurants, authorities said.

Former State Sen. Patrick McDonald, who represented Narragansett and South Kingstown, was sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison for embezzling $163,000.

Authorities said McDonald, a former lawyer, stole the money from law clients and used it on hotels and restaurants, according to the Associated Press. He tried to blame the theft on his mistress. McDonald, 50, is married.

A Democrat, he served as senator from 1996 to 2002. Officials said he owes nearly $180,000 in in campaign-finance fines, according to the AP.
