Coventry Woman Charged in Fatal South Kingstown Crash

Amanda Lyons of Coventry has been charged with DUI - Death Resulting, among other charges, following the fatal Nov. 23 crash that killed passenger John Balzano.

A 27-year-old Coventry woman has been charged in the crash that killed a 26-year-old Providence man last month, according to a police statement released Monday.

Amanda Lyons, of 63 Isle of Capri Road, Coventry, has been charged with DUI-Death Resulting and three counts of Possession of Controlled Substance Schedule I-V, following her Dec. 16 arraignment in Fourth District Court.

At approximately 12:52 a.m. on Nov. 23, Lyons was allegedly driving her 2002 Mitsubishi Gallant northbound on Route 1 when she struck a utility pole at the entrance to the South County Commons. Police say the sole passenger, John Balzano, 26, of Providence, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at South County Hospital soon after. Lyons was also transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

In addition, a preliminary license suspension was issued to Lyons following her arraignment Monday morning in the RI Traffic Tribunal for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test.

She was released on $10,000 personal recognizance and is due back in court for on Feb. 11.
