Mary D. Averill, Navy WAVES Veteran, Dies at 91

November 12, 1921 - August 24, 2013

Mary (Donnelly) Averill, 91, of Kingston, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Grand Islander Nursing Home in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Albert N. Averill, Sr.

Mary was born in Worcester, MA. She served as a Navy WAVE in Europe after World War II. She continued her secretarial career in the States until her marriage. She owned and operated abbajamme, a woman’s clothing store in Wakefield, for several years before retiring. A devout Catholic, she spent her retirement years performing charitable works for Christ the King Church and enjoying and caring for her cherished grandchildren.

She is survived by her six loving children, Mary Ellen Grouchau of Palm Desert, CA, Albert N. Averill, Jr. of Montague, MA, Anne T. Averill of Charlestown, RI, Barbara A. Wilk of Kingston, RI, Benjamin M. Averill of Seekonk, MA, John A. Averill of Kingston, RI and nine beloved grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, August 30, 2013 in Christ the King Church on Old North Road in Kingston, followed by a burial with military honors at the RI Veterans Cemetery in Exeter. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Catholic Charities, checks for Catholic Charities may be sent to RI Catholic Charities Appeal, c/o Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd., Kingston, RI 02881.
