Grisham's "A Time to Kill" Coming to Broadway

Grisham is coming to the bright lights of Broadway!

How will a great book made into an equally mesmermizing movie translate to the stage? Some of my favorite legal thrillers are written by John Grisham, and I've just learned that his first book is coming to Broadway this fall.

As you likely know, Grisham is a lawyer who turned to writing after ten years of practicing law in Mississippi.  I fondly recall reading and watching the movie concerning an idealistic young lawyer (Matthew McConaughey) defending a black man (Samuel L. Jackson) accused of rape.  Add Kevin Spacey and Sandra Bullock circa 1996 to the mix and the movie casting was hard to beat.  A Time to Kill is the first of his books to be adapted for the stage.

Grisham has said that the book was written after he overheard some riveting testimony while hanging around the courthouse. A twelve-year-old girl had been raped and beaten, and her recounting of the ordeal on the witness stand made the jury cry. The testimony stayed with Grisham, and three years later, he had completed the crime novel based on her story.

Rights to the book were acquired by producer Daryl Roth in 2009 and the play was written by Rupert Holmes. A Time to Kill is set to open on October 20, 2013 - will you be checking it out?
