Wakefield Resident, URI Landscape Design Student, Presents Plans for Richmond Rec Center

Nicholas Zartarian of Wakefield along with 14 other URI students presented proposals for a multi-purpose recreation center, as well as sustainable practices and materials for its construction.

A group of University of Rhode Island landscape design students, including Nicholas Zartarian of Wakefield, recently presented their ideas for turning a 47-acre parcel in Richmond, into a multi-purpose recreation center.

The presentation followed a public workshop held earlier at which the URI students had solicited input from local residents. They also conducted an online survey seeking input on preferred recreation needs and presented preliminary plans to a jury of designers at URI.

The students were also tasked with incorporating sustainable practices and materials into their designs.

Ideas suggested by the public were wide-ranging, from construction of a senior center and swimming pool to athletic fields, bike paths and an amphitheater. Based on these suggestions, the 15 students divided into three groups to develop master plans.
