Wakefield Resident Named Collegiate Equestrian Association 'National Rider of the Month'

Samantha Smith of Wakefield recently earned the NCEA honor.

Wakefield resident Samantha Smith, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina and a member of the school's equestrian team, was named one of four National Riders of the Month by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) earlier this month. Smith, whose position on the team is equitation on the flat, was joined in the honor by two of her teammates, senior Johnna Letchworth (reining) and junior Katherine Schmidt (equitation over fences).

"This is a very special recognition for our team and we are all proud of Samantha, Johnna and Katherine on their national awards," South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. "We've won five of eight national rider of the month awards this season and two of four SEC rider of the month awards, so individually, we've had some folks riding extremely well and that's really good to see."

Smith was named the October Equitation On The Flat Rider of the Month. She posted a 3-1 record during the month with two MVP honors, all which were earned on the road.
