Engaging our Future Leaders

Press Release

            Engaging our Future Leaders

North Kingstown, RI – July 10, 2014: Local artists Kaela Kennedy and Hannah Blackwood transform The Hive RI’s not so nice bathroom by creating a mural of tranquility. `

Tuni Schartner, co-founder of The Hive RI, commissioned Kaela Kennedy and Hannah Blackwood, both recent North Kingstown High School graduates, to paint the bathroom at The Hive RI after meeting them at the North Kingstown Library’s Art Exhibition. Tuni and The Hive RI community are passionately committed to promoting and engaging our future leaders through internships - with a special focus on URI & NKHS students.  The bathroom mural seemed like a great opportunity to give these young artists some real life experience. Tuni wanted a tranquil, relaxing mural, with a focus on nature and after listening to her requests and ideas for the project, Kaela and Hannah worked to reconcile their own styles with the space available. The graphic lines and bright colors of Japanese block prints were the inspiration for the design of the mural that is scheduled to be completed by The Hive RI’s Art Show Open House on Saturday, July 19th.

Kaela Kennedy graduated from the North Kingstown High School this summer. She has painted for years and together with Hannah, cofounded the North Kingstown High School Art club. She hopes to develop as a local artist by creating more murals and inspires to participate in art galleries. Kaela will be attending Salve Regina University in the fall, where she plans to major in Graphic Design and Marketing. Hannah Blackwood is also a North Kingstown High School graduate from this year’s graduating class. Hannah has hosted a professional craft fair for the art department, has painted multiple murals for her school and plans to create more art for future galleries. She will be attending the University of Rhode Island in the fall as an undeclared student.
