Community Corner

East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society

At its monthly meeting on Monday, November 18, Chester Browning will talk to members of the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society on the old poor farms and how they evolved into state facilities like the Ladd School and Zambarano Hospital.  Poor farms were 19th century institutions where the poor and indigent elderly members of a community would be fed and housed.

Mr. Browning is a retired photographer for the Rhode Island State Police.  He photographed all of the pauper cemeteries in the state and his research led him to the history of poor farms.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 with a potluck supper at the Old Jail, 110 King Street, East Greenwich.  Mr. Browning's illustrated lecture begins at 7:30.  The meeting is free and open to the public.  Call Sue Curado at 884-4643 or e-mail her at lencu@cox.net for reservations.
