WHAT'S So Darned Special???

OK...Going out on a limb, here, but...here goes. First, not being a football fan, there would be NO reason for me to have caught ANY of the game, last evening. However, I live with adult sons who are fans; not necessarily, Denver or Baltimore fans, per se, but, to them...FOOTBALL is FOOTBALL, after all. In that I was in the living-room, with a 45" screen in my face, I was subjected to whatever was going on, on the large screen, up to the point, prior to removing myself from the premises. Here is my point, relative to all of this: As long as I shall live, I will NEVER understand the need for all of the HOOPLA, and, ridiculous( to me) pre-game 'stuff', that is part and parcel to Pro-Sporting events, these days. Really? Years ago, and, yes...I know I'm 'dating' myself, EVERYTHING was not treated to be so darned SPECIAL. I know that last night's game was the first game of the season; yet, did it really demand, or, deserve, such extravagance, displayed in it's inception? While I was growing up, once per year, while watching a Superbowl game, we were entertained by special guests, pyrotechnics, and, 'pomp and circumstance'; fan, or, not, we would watch, as it was a thing made unique, by it's celebratory feel; a thing we looked forward to, akin to a holiday. It was an event which felt special, because it was. Today, so much is treated as exceptional, uncommon, or, distinct, to the point that NOTHING seems to surpass the standard for what is considered common. This same, type, treatment toward, most, modes of entertainment is 'alive and well' within the movie industry, as well. Why does, almost, every, movie made, today, need to have a 3-D version? I don't get it...sorry! In a world where everything must be 'bigger than life', 'over the top', and, 'in your face', how can we perceive of anything, to, truly, feel momentous? I dunno...is it JUST me, who feels this way? Well...even if I am alone in this, I still stand firm in my feeling(s). Throughout, all of my 'ranting', I am reminded of a lyric to a song, by Glen Campbell. Ooops...dating myself, once again! The words to which I refer ask this question. 'What's the difference being different, when it's difference, now, that looks alike...?' In our world, today, this reality is truer, now, than ever before. We, as a society, are inundated with all manner of 'over-produced', 'over-rated', and, 'over-done' genres of entertainment. Naturally, I cannot speak for anyone, other than myself, but, I sure, preferred, the way things were, 'once upon a time'. Just Sayin'...
