Jim Harvey Rocks Narragansett Every Thursday

Jim Harvey and his musical guests bring fireworks to George's of Galilee.

Jim Harvey is a regular musician at the George's of Galilee, since every Thursday for the summer, he enlightens diners with his well done covers. This particular Thursday was a special one for Harvey, as old school friends of his came out for an unofficial event.

Harvey had musical guests that evening, including local musicians Matt McKay and Debbie Lewis. The duo rocked out to 1990s alternative rock covers.

Lewis, a resident of Narragansett, can belt out vocals that stand against pop artists like Alanis Morrisette. Lewis was once a contestant on Star Search in the late 1980s. Her partner, McKay, also sings well, even if he told the crowd he couldn’t. They are currently in the midst of getting together local shows.

Also rocking out with Jim was fellow school friend and the sister of Lewis, Melissa Platt. She is visiting for the holiday from Mississippi, where she moved to more than 15 years ago from Rhode Island. Like her sister, her vocal talents are outstanding. Platt used to tour with a band, but has chosen to take a non-musical road, and enjoys singing now and then.

Platt sang a few songs with Harvey, whose vocals could match Melissa Etheridge's. In fact, Platt did a few Melissa Etheridge covers. She also covered Bette Midler’s “The Rose,” which she sang as a duet with Harvey.

Harvey has been on a long musical adventure. Starting in around 1991, Harvey was in the former country band, Sundown, not to be confused with current country bands that go by the same name. Harvey’s Sundown opened for national acts, such as Billie Ray Cyrus and Trace Adkins. On occasion, the band reunites to play special events.

Currently, Harvey plays as a solo act. He has an acoustic guitar and an adoring audience. Harvey takes requests and performs perfect renditions of songs. He received a request from a kid who wanted to hear a Michael Jackson song, and Harvey complied with a fantastic version. At times, he even throws in commercial jingles.

Harvey also includes covers from artists such as Jason Mraz, Prince and The Foo Fighters.

During Harvey’s cover of the Proclaimers' “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” a table of Harvey’s friends decided to yell their own version of the chorus during the song. Everyone thought it was quite amusing, including Harvey.

Harvey is a talented local musician who is fun to see. He will be playing for the summer months at George’s of Galilee every Thursday.
