Best Sandwich – Island Deli

The Wicked Willow turns out to be the tipping point.

Thanks to Twitter accounts, is this week’s Readers’ Choice winner for Best Sandwich.

The actual were close, with all four choices – Island Deli, , the and others (, 590 Catering, Ma and Pa) – each picking up between 12 and 19 votes each. So, I went to comments and ratings for the tiebreaker.

On Twitter, I got several comments specifically for the Wicked Willow sandwich at Island Deli. The menu describes it as:

“So good we put it on the menu twice... Willow Tree chicken salad, applewood smoked bacon, fresh tomato and Muenster cheese melting out of a pressed wrap...Wicked Good 6.99.”

… Since it’s about 12:30 p.m. and I haven’t eaten, I’m now regretting doing this article now.

Next week’s poll will be about the best flower shops in town. If you have nominations you definitely want on the poll, please tell us before! I do my best to try and round up relevant stores from our directory, but a few always slip through the cracks.

Can someone explain why ANY restaurant/sandwich shop would 'proudly' announce that they serve Willow Tree chicken salad? I can go to the store and buy it too. Shouldn't a good restaurant make their own stuff? Never understood this. It just says 'lazy' so loudly to me. Like chicken salad is too hard to make?

It about brand appeal. Willow tree is a premium brand and when you order it you know what to expect. Think of beverages, they are easy to make but many people prefer pepsi or coke because they know what to expect. Lots of places do the same thing. Ie... TGI Fridays having "Jack Daniels" sauce on their ribs. To most businesses associating their name with another product perceived to have a positive image is seen as a good thing. A good restaurant knows that. Look at the places around here selling Allie's donuts. Are they lazy or just know a good product when they see it? I've never been to Island Deli but I'm guessing they do make some of their own stuff. To each their own I guess...

Anonymous - Coke is a beverage, which is something you have with the meal. The sauce with JD in it goes on top of a meal which (I hope) is made by the restaurant. A "sandwich" shop serving Willow Tree is no different than a seafood place serving prepared frozen fish. It's not fresh, it's not homemade, and it is lazy.

Well Dave L., You seem to be quite the food critic (at least on yelp) and I doubt I will change your mind. I think though if you went behind the scene of any restaurant you'd be surprised at how much of the food is ready made. Next time you go to a place you like ask them if they really make their cole slaw or if their burgers were ground in the kitchen... or came out of a Cisco truck.

If you're ok with Cisco, great. I don't like it and try to go to places that do things a better way. And I am discriminating about where and what I eat - why settle for Cisco when there are plenty of places that make food from scratch? There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and aren't more expensive than those that take shortcuts.

If you don't eat at the Island Deli, then why do you care what they serve in the first place? get a life.

Island Deli also serves boar's head meats. It's a deli so they serve deli food made to order. I don't think that anything there is home made but I will tell you that the Wicked Willow is awesome! Chicken salad w/bacon &cheese in a wrap & pressed. I add avocado & tomato. They have a good lobster sandwich too.
