Snow, Wind and Cold Prompts Winter Storm Watch

As much as 5-10 inches is possible across much of the state, especially along the south coast and East Bay.

A snowstorm forecasted to start Tuesday night is shaping up to be a bit more than just an inch or two across much of Rhode Island.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. The so-called “jackpot” area is expected to span from the Tiverton-Little Compton area through Cape Cod, but heavy snow with accumulations of 4-8 inches are possible throughout much of the state, especially along the south coast and islands. Some weather maps predict as much as 10 inches in some areas.

The snow is expected to start on Tuesday afternoon and last through Wednesday morning.

"Snow covered roadways will cause difficult driving conditions,” the weather service said. “Periods of moderate to heavy snow along with gusty winds will cause visibilities at a mile or less.”

The wind will blow from the north at 10-20 miles per hour with gusts to 35 mph.

In addition to the heavy snow and strong wind, the temperature will be in single digits and the teens.

As has been the case all winter, the snow will have its greatest impact on driving with travel “slow at best on well treated surfaces and quite difficult on any unplowed or untreated surfaces,” according to the weather service.
