Five Things, July 4: Fireworks, Trash Pickup Delay and More

Today is Thursday, July 4, 2013 and here are five things you should know about.

Happy 4th! As we all know, today is Independence Day! But it's not just about cookouts and fireworks. Did you know that Congress passed the holiday in 1870, but July 4 wasn’t a paid federal holiday until 1941? It's true! Click here to learn more about the history of our nation's birthday.

Fireworks: South Kingstown's annual 4th of July Fireworks Display will take place tonight at 9:15 p.m. at Old Mountain Field! Pick your favorite viewing spot and feel free to share your firework photos here on Narragasett-South Kingstown Patch!

Live Music and Dancing at the Towers: There will be live music and dancing today and every Thursday night at the Towers in Narragansett this summer. All ages are welcome. The events will feature bands from all over the country playing Swing, Cajun, Zydeco, Jump Blues, Waltzes, Fox Trots and Rock and Roll. Tickets cost $10 per person up to $35 per person (prices vary). Please check the website for an updated schedule of performances.

What's open and what's closed? Banks will be closed. Markets will be open. Liquor stores will be open, but contact them directly for hours. Restaurants are open on a case-by-case basis. All school and municipal offices are closed, as well as police and fire administration offices (records, tax collection, etc.)

Safety: If you buy your own fireworks to do at home, make sure to use caution and have a bucket of water nearby (yes, I speak from experience!). Check out some more firework safety tips here.
