National School Boards Association honors Dr. Maureen Cotter

Maureen Cotter, Chair of the South Kingstown School Committee, recently received a Distinguished Service Award from the National School Boards Association for her outstanding commitment to public education through her school committee leadership and service on the local and national levels.

 Maureen has been serving on the South Kingstown School Committee for 16 years and has been chair of that committee since 2010.

In a letter to Dr. Cotter, David Pickler, President of the National School Boards Association wrote, "Through your service, you have made a significant contribution to public education in your district and your state, and you have helped to increase respect for school boards across America.  By your excellent work as a school committee member, you have helped to prepare students to become successful, contributing members of a changing, global society."

Dr. Cotter has also demonstrated her commitment to ongoing professional development, as she is a graduate of the Rhode Island Association of School Committee's(RIASC) Leadership Academy, and has accrued more than 100 hours of professional development through RIASC's  Master's Academy.   She holds and Ed.D in Education Leadership and also serves as a professional governance consultant.

 

Founded in 1940, NSBA is a not-for-profit organization representing state associations of school boards and their more than 90,000 local school board members throughout the United States, virtually all of whom are elected. These local officials govern more than 13,600 local school districts serving the nation’s 50 million public school students. NSBA achieves that mission by representing the school board perspective in working with federal government agencies and national organizations that impact education, and provides vital information and services to state associations of school boards throughout the nation.  www.nsba.org
