Police Chief Plunges 24 Times for Special Olympics Rhode Island, This Time Brings Friends
On Saturday, March 1, 2014, the Special Olympics Super Plunge will commence at 1 PM at Goddard Park. Last year, Chief Elwood Johnson went above and beyond the call of duty, taking 24 “Super Plunges” into the freezing water at Goddard Park all to raise money for over 2,800 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Rhode Island. This year, he’s at it again, as are three more brave men that have decided to join in this chilling endeavor. Jim Cummings, Bob Matthews, and Eric Leclerc have each vowed to plunge with Johnson once an hour for a 24 hour duration. For these brave four, this not only means a sleepless, freezing night on the beach, but also a chance to raise awareness and funds for a cause that means so much to them. Johnson, Cummings, and Matthews have all been long-time volunteers with Special Olympics Rhode Island. They have quickly progressed from familiar faces at events to champions for our cause. Eric Leclerc is not only a coach of the Lincoln Northstars team, but also has a daughter, Sofia, in our program. He will be plunging for Sofia and the thousands of other athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state.
The group’s final plunge will be on March 2nd at 12 noon with plungers participating in the 7th Annual Torch Run Plunge. 4 Men. 24 Hours. 96 Plunges. 1 Super Cause.
Join us on the beach to cheer for these brave men and all other plungers this weekend!
