Monday Essentials: Free Holiday Concert, HealthSourceRI Discussion and More

Today is Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 and here are some things to know about the week ahead.

Holiday Concert: At 7 p.m. on Monday, the Wakefield Concert Band will hold a free holiday concert in the South Kingstown High School auditorium, located at 215 Columbia Street in Wakefield. Sit back and enjoy as the 75-piece band plays a number of holiday favorites. Immediately following the concert, guests are invited to enjoy homemade cookies and cider. Note: The Wakefield Concert Band will once again be collecting collecting toiletries (tissues, soaps, hair products, etc.) which will be given to the Jonnycake Center in Peace Dale.  

Storytime at SK Nature Center: From 10-10:45 a.m. today and each Monday through Dec. 9, the South Kingstown Parks & Recreation Department will host Storytime at the Tri-Pond Park Nature Center, located at 110 Asa Pond Road, off of Curtis Corner Road in South Kingstown. Each week, children may join instructor Joyce Campbell by a warm fire and explore the wonderful world of Eric Carle stories, while meeting new friends and making a simple craft. Children 5 and under require adult accompaniment. $5 per child.

Public Education Forum: At 7 p.m. this and each Tuesday evening through Dec. 10, the University of Rhode Island Fall 2013 Honors Colloquium will offer public education forums in Edwards Auditorium on the Kingston Campus. In this series, coordinated by David Byrd and Diane Kern, participants will explore how education still matters and debate key issues central to understanding the future of public schools and higher education. Click here for details about this week's forum.

Walk-A-While Wednesday: From 12-1 p.m. on Wednesday, URI's College of Human Science and Services in partnership with the Dept. of Kinesiology will host "Walk-a-While on Wednesday".The new health initiative will be led by Kinesiology walking coaches who will guide participants through a mapped path.

HealthSourceRI Discussion: From 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, the Peace Dale Library, located at 1057 Kingstown Road, Peace Dale, will host an afternoon of drop-in discussions regarding new health care choices. Representatives from HealthSourceRI, Rhode Island’s health insurance exchange, will be available for one-on-one help finding information and signing up for health insurance. No registration necessary.

Star Gazing at Frosty Drew Observatory: This and every Friday night at 6 p.m., get star struck at the Frosty Drew Observatory's Public Stargazing Night (61 Park Ln., Charlestown). Be sure to subscribe to the Frost Drew Observatory mailing list or follow them on Twitter (@FrostyDrewOBSY) to receive status updates about the public stargazing program. This is a free event, however donations are greatly appreciated.
