I still respected the creator and lead voice of the show, Seth McFarlane. He’s a Rhode Island School of Design graduated, and it was very neat to see him create a show that was marketed to mass audiences that showcased a family, albeit a cartoon one, from Rhode Island. When I'm out of state and people find out I'm from Rhode Island, the first question they always ask is if the fictional town of Quahog in Family Guy is real. Hearing that Seth was …
Moonrise Kingdom Quirky, unique, bizarre, hilarious, innovative, and genius. These are all words that can perfectly describe Wes Anderson, the writer and director of Moonrise Kingdom. I've always been a huge fan of Wes Anderson's filmography. I own every single piece of work that he has put out. When I found out a film of his was going to be shot in my state of Rhode Island and that I'd be able to see it in the theaters, I became ecstatic. Wes has the incredible talent to be able to create an environment which his characters live in that just seems so natural, to the point that it feels like …
Prometheus I went into this film with a lot of expectations. I started to get really interested in this film when I read about all of the key actors that had signed on to team up with the masterful director, Ridley Scott. Names like Guy Pearce, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, and Charlize Theron. The big hype regarding Prometheus began a number of months ago when the film started a vast viral campaign – almost too much in my opinion. For a few weeks it seemed like everyday I went on the Internet there was a new video regarding the film. I stopped watching them a while ago so I could go into …
I have been always been a very big fan of these films. The original Men in Black was one of the first films that I can really remember falling in love with as a child. The sequel did not disappoint me when I was 11 and saw it in 2002. All three of these films have a distinct vibe to them that fits perfectly. The first film is all about action and suspense, and it has a lot of it. The second film was the comic relief, although it still had a bit of comedy in it. This film, Men in Black III, was full of mystery, action and comedy blended quite well. Men in Black III picks up the plot without …
21 Jump Street (2012) Directed by Phul Lord and Chris Miller Written by Michael Bacall All of the trailers leading up to 21 Jump Street didn't get me that interested in this comedy – it just seemed very bland and boring. I knew I would eventually see it because I find Jonah Hill to be intriguing in any role, and he did help out with the writing of this film. I figured it would have a few good laughs, but mostly those displayed in the trailer. I was wrong with that assumption. Within the first 10 minutes they show mostly everything from the trailer, then the laughs just keep on coming after …
I read 12 Angry Men as a play years ago, and actually saw this at the time, but I don't remember it at all. Let's face facts – I was in eighth grade and could care less. Boy, was I naive. Right from the opening scene you can tell as a viewer that the accused was not getting a fair trial. The judge seemed lackadaisical in his closing remarks to the jury. It seemed like he did not want to be there and could care less about the fate of the 18-year-old boy standing in front of him. I know you're a "man" when you turn 18 but I still refer to the accused as a boy. The troubled look in his face said…
Network – Directed by Sidney Lumet, written by Paddy Chayfesky – 1976 release Perfection. This is one of the best if not the best satirical film of all time. Never has so much truth been conveyed on screen. America thrives off of “the tube.” We need it in our everyday lives. It tells us what to think, how to feel and even how to express ourselves. Howard Beale (Peter Finch) is an aging news anchor for a fictional station that is going down the drain, fast. He is retiring due to low ratings, and on one of his final broadcasts proclaims in an act of insanity and/or desperation that he is going …
"The Artist" – Written and Directed by:Michel Hazanavicus – 2011 release I don’t think I’ve ever had an experience as unique as I had at the cinemas when I saw The Artist. I was captivated the second the film started to roll, as the beauty of the film jumped out right away. The first noticeable thing was the lack of sound and spoken dialogue – The creators made up for it in other ways. The score of the film drives your heart, as well as your mind, right from the get go. The main character, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), plays a silent film star that is larger than life. He knows it, and so …
