The Mystic Aquarium has applied to be the permanent home to an 8-month-old female harbor seal puppy that it helped nurse back to health. Starting this past Friday, the seal pup is on display at the aquarium while the facility waits for approval of its application to add her to its Pacific Northwest habitat. The seal had to have a fin amputated to save its life. “We are very pleased with Pup 49’s recovery,” said Mystic Aquarium Veterinarian Dr. Allison Tuttle. “While any surgery comes with risks, the infection was spreading and we knew amputation was her only chance for survival. At about 1:12 p.m. on Feb. 27, police received a report of a black and white shorthair cat stuck in a tree on Wood Sorrel Terrace. According to Narragansett Animal Control Officer Art Smith, the cat appeared to be about 30 feet up and mobile. Last weekend, Ina Sciabarrasi’s dogs were trapped under her shed, and without hesitation, the firefighters at the Kingston Fire Station helped her rescue the two. According to Sciabarrasi, three of the firefighters examined the two dogs stuck under the shed and determined the quickest way to get them out would be by digging. The puppy managed to get herself out from under the shed quickly, but the firefighters had to dig for several minutes to free the older dog. “I’m very grateful to Kingston Fire for their willingness to help and felt others would appreciate this story,” Sciabarrasi said. …
Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue team released two 5-month-old harbor seal pups, Hershey and Brunswick, into the waters of Charlestown Breachway State Beach today. Both Hershey, a female, and Brunswick, a male, were rescued in Maine and spent a brief period of time undergoing rehabilitation at the University of New England’s Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center in Biddeford, Maine, before being transferred to Mystic Aquarium’s Seal Rescue Clinic. Hershey was rescued on May 28 and came to Mystic Aquarium on June 4. A thin, dehydrated, abandoned pup, she was treated with supportive fluid therapy …
