Four local tennis players will be on the courts this weekend, as the Northeast Conference holds its men’s and women’s tennis playoffs, and Wheaton College plays in its final regular season game. Narragansett resident Amy Toegemann has racked up an 11-7 singles record for Division II Stonehill, playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Toegemann is a senior, and a graduate of the Lincoln School in Providence. Wakefield resident and sophomore Katie Gilligan is also on Stonehill. She has posted a 14-7 record, playing at No. 2 to No. 6 singles. Gilligan is a graduate of the Prout School. Stonehill is …

Bad night for Ponaganset, good night for Doyles. Freshman Dan Doyle scored 13 points for Narragansett against Ponaganset in last night’s varsity boys’ basketball game, leading the Mariners in scoring. Unfortunately for Ponaganset, Doyle’s scoring alone would have been enough for the Mariners, but he had eight other teammates who scored, including his brother Pat, the second-leading scorer with 10. Narragansett won 57-11, which is not a typo – Read the box score from The Providence Journal here. The Mariners are 4-2 overall, and 2-2 in Division II-South. They play at Central Falls 7 p.m. …
Here are the Five Sports Things for Wednesday, December 28, 2011: The Narragansett boys' basketball team is hosting the Mariner Holiday Basketball Tournament today and tomorrow, starting at 6 p.m. each night. The Mariners (2-2, 1-2 Division II-South) play East Greenwich (1-4, 1-1 Division III-South) tonight, followed by a game with Fitch or South Kingstown (1-2, 0-2 Division I-South) on Thursday. All games are being held at Narragansett High School. The girls' basketball team plays in a holiday tournament at North Kingstown at the same time as the boys on Wednesday and Thursday. (So if you're…
Here are the Five Sports Things for Wednesday, December 21, 2011: No perfect season. In basketball action Tuesday night, the Mariners fell 83-68 to the Westerly Bulldogs, thanks to some hot second half shooting by Westerly's Austin Cilley. The Mariners will attempt to get off the schnide, as a horrible hack broadcaster would say, on Thursday, as they host the West Warwick Wizards at 7 p.m. Early in the season, West Warwick looks like the class of Division II, as they demoralized and destroyed the Chargers on Tuesday night. Wondering about girls' basketball? Us too! The girls' also played this…
