KINGSTON – Players and coaches from the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team Sweet Sixteen run in 1988 were honored during a timeout in Saturday’s game between the Rams and the University of Massachusetts.
The biggest ovations came for the coaches of that team though – head coach Tom Penders, now a full-time Narragansett resident, and assistant coach Al Skinner. After Penders left URI, Skinner took over the job and led the Rams to several more NCAA appearances.
