Today: Honor Those Who Fought for Our Freedom
Here are 5 things to know today, Friday, Nov. 11.
1. Thank a Veteran Today
Veteran's Day is much more than a day out of work or school. Today is a day to step back and reflect on the enormous sacrifices the veterans of our country have made to defend our way of life and protect the freedoms we are so priviledged to enjoy.
Most know someone who fought in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and countless other military operations around the world. Make an effort to seek out those people today and thank them for all they have given us. And take a moment to think about those who can't be thanked in person.
2. Everyone Loves a Parade
The South Kingstown Veteran’s Day Parade, sponsored by the American Legion Post 39 and the town of South Kingstown, will kick off at 10 a.m. today.
The parade route will run from Holly Street, to Main Street, to High Street, ending at Saugatucket Park. The South Kingstown and Chariho High School bands marching bands are expected to perform and local veterans organizations will be represented as we pay tribute to America's vets.
After the parade, a ceremony honoring all veterans will be conducted at Saugatucket Park beginning about 11 a.m.
3. End of the World As We Know It?
Today is 11-11-11. Merely a coincidental grouping of numbers that occurs 12 times a century? Or is it something more? Does it spell doom for all?
It just might be the end of the world. At least, that is part of the premise of the movie coming out, 11-11-11. If you have further interest about whether today is our last day on Earth, you can join this Facebook group, “11/11/11, End of the World?”
4. Saturday Night Lights
The South Kingstown High School football team hosts East Providence High School Saturday at 7 p.m. at Curtis Corner Middle School, 301 Curtis Corner Road.
5. Sunny Skies, Cooler Temps
Thursday's rains brought cooler temperatures as highs top out in the low-50s today. Early clouds will give way to sunshine in the afternoon, which should last through the weekend. Temperatures will warm slightly, possibly touching 60 Sunday afternoon.

Please remember that a Veteran is not only someone who fought in a war, but anybody who served in the military, whether during war time or peace time. If you know anyone who has served our country, or who is currently serving, be sure to shake their hand and tell them "Thank you" for their service. Not just today, but every day! God bless our Veterans!
