Today: Community Healthy Summit Closing Meeting, Seal Tours, A Rare Discovery

Don't leave home without Five Things, a quick rundown of five stories and announcements pertaining to life in South Kingstown today.

The final meeting of the South Kingstown Healthy Places By Design Project Community Summit, co-hosted by the South Kingstown Planning Department and the South County YMCA, will be held tonight at the town hall in the form of a Planning Board work session at the Council Chambers.  For the past few weeks, community members and experts have met to discuss ways the town can capitalize on healthy decision making from eating local foods to encouraging more bike and pedestrian-friendly street designs.  Tonight’s session will bring those ideas into focus as the town moves forward with plans to update its comprehensive plan.  The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.

2. Want to see a cow or pup that doesn’t live on land? The Save The Bay Seal Watching Cruises, which treat peepers to panoplies of splash-happy seals, kick off on Thanksgiving weekend.  These cruises provide the perfect opportunity to introduce holiday guests to the many wonders Rhode Island has to offer.

One- or two-hour tours provide stunning glimpses of harbor seals while pepperingguests with fun facts about the aquatic mammals – such as their social habits and frequent haunts.  Expert guide and binoculars included in ticket price!  Guests of all ages welcome.

The Boat departs Bowen’s Ferry Landing, Newport beginning Saturday, November 26 through Sunday, April 22.

  • One-hour tours/$20 per person. $15 for Save The Bay members, seniors and children aged 5 to 12.  Children under 5 are free.
  • Two-hour tours are $30/person and include a lighthouse tour.  $25 for Save The Bay members, seniors and children aged 5 to 12.  Children under 5 are free.

3. A nest containing the fossilized remains of 15 juvenile Protoceratops andrewsi dinosaurs from Mongolia has been described by a University of Rhode Island paleontologist, revealing new information about postnatal development and parental care. It is the first nest of this genus ever found and the first indication that Protoceratops juveniles remained in the nest for an extended period.

The findings were reported in the most recent issue of the Journal of Paleontology, according to a University of Rhode Island news release.

4. The first official day of the holiday shopping season — and the deep discounts offered by most retailers — usually draw hordes of deal-hunting shoppers and could be a sign of a rebound in consumer spending.

So, which are you — a deal hunter, or someone who avoids Black Friday?

Let us know by casting a vote in our poll.

5. Rain? What rain?

The alleged threat of rain for today has all but dried up, but be on the lookout for some possible showers this afternoon with a high of 48, according to Weatherbug’s Wakefield forecast. It’s definitely a “remote starter” kind of morning, however. Brrrrr! Tomorrow will bring a greater threat of rain, making way for a sunny Thanksgiving Thursday.
