SK Police Log: September 14, 2012
An SK man is charged with drunken driving, and several URI students are cited for alcohol violations.
Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the South Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
South Kingstown Man Charged With Drunken Driving
Basil H. Rockwell, 30, of 1608 Kingstown Road, South Kingstown, was arrested at about 3:04 a.m. on Sept. 14 and charged with drunken driving, and cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.
According to police, an officer driving on Kingstown Road near Upper College Road clocked a car driven by Rockwell at 51 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. A traffic stop was made on Kingstown Road.
Police said that Rockwell smelled of alcohol. As a result, they asked him to submit to field sobriety tests, which police said he took and failed.
According to police, Rockwell refused to submit to a chemical test at headquarters. He was processed and released at about 4:45 a.m.
Coventry Man Arrested for Suspended License
Brian Greene, 39, of 192 Tiogue Ave., Coventry, was arrested at about 8:10 p.m. on Sept. 14 and charged with driving with a suspended license.
According to police, an officer traveling behind Greene’s truck on Route 1 near Indian Head Trail saw it swerving. As a result, a traffic stop was made after the intersection of Route 1 and Route 138.
Police said a background check revealed that Greene’s license was suspended. Police noted that it was suspended in July 2010 after Greene pleaded to a Massachusetts State Police charge of drunken driving, third offense.
According to police, a 16-year-old was in the car with Greene at the time. An officer waited with the teenager until a family member could pick up the teen.
Greene was processed and then released at about 10 p.m.
Two College Students Cited for Transportation of Alcohol by a Minor, Using Fake ID
Valerie L. Janos, 19, of 47 Meadow St., Tarrytown, NY, and Peter M. Carlino, 19, of 61 Meadow St., Tarryton, NY, were cited at about 9:01 p.m. on Sept. 14.
Janos was charged with transportation of alcohol by a minor, and Carlino was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor. According to online records, Janos is a student at the University of Rhode Island, and Carlino is a student at the State University of New York.
According to police, officers monitoring the parking lot of Patsy’s noted suspicious behavior from Janos and Carlino.
Police said that Janos parked in the last spot of the lot, despite it being empty, and then left after Carlino got out of the car. Police said she came back a short time later, shortly after Carlino had finished buying alcohol.
According to police, a traffic stop was made on Railroad Street by Kingstown Road based on their behavior. Police said an interview of Carlino led to the confiscation of a fake ID.
Police said a search of the car revealed a 1.75-liter bottle of Burnett’s Pink Lemonade vodka, which was confiscated. Janos was cited for transportation as a result.
URI Student Cited for Transportation of Alcohol by a Minor
Connor P. Guditus, 18, of 2965 Marratooka Road, Mattituck, NY, was cited at about 8:05 p.m. on Sept. 14 and charged with transportation of alcohol by a minor. Police said Guditus is a student at the University of Rhode Island.
According to police, an officer noted a car driven by Guditus make an illegal right-hand turn on a red light at Dale Carlia Corner. A traffic stop was made at the intersection of Main and River streets.
Police said that during the ensuing traffic stop, a bottle of Karkov vodka could be seen by the feet of a passenger. The alcohol was confiscated and Guditus was cited.
Two URI Students Cited for Possession of Alcohol
Joshua M. Dooz, 18, of 82 Price St., Dobbs Ferry, NY, and Kimberly A. Konopka, 18, of 176 Hampshire Drive, Glastonbury, CT, were cited at about 11:43 p.m. on Sept. 14 and charged with possession of alcohol. Both are students at URI, according to online records.
According to police, an officer traveling on Old North Road near Bills Road saw Dooz, Konopka and a third person walking with open bottles of beer. Background checks confirmed they were underage, and both were cited for possession.
Charlestown Teen Cited for Possession of Alcohol
Nicholas J. Cherenzia, 18, of 30 Driftwood Drive, Charlestown, was cited at about 11:26 p.m. on Sept. 14 and charged with possession of alcohol by a minor. According to online records, Cherenzia is a student at URI.
According to police, an officer traveling on Old North Road near Fortin Road saw a group of about 20 people in the roadway. Police noted that as they drove near the group, one person – later identified as Cherenzia – ran into the nearby woods and hid behind a tree.
Police said that an interview with Cherenzia based on his suspicious behavior revealed that he had pitched a small water bottle of alcohol in the woods. He was cited for possession.
