North Kingstown Woman Charged With Drunken Driving
Susan D. Northup, 61, of 71 Harrington Road, North Kingstown, was arrested at about 12:50 a.m. on Oct. 22 and charged with drunken driving, possession of marijuana and driving in possession of a controlled substance.
According to police, an officer saw a Toyota Corolla driven by Northup swerving and going five to 10 miles per hour under the speed limit on Succotash Road. As a result, a traffic stop was made near Congdon Road.
Police said that Northup smelled strongly of alcohol and marijuana. She allegedly told police she had had a glass of wine about 15 minutes before the traffic stop, and that the marijuana was gone because she had smoked it all.
According to police, Northup consented to field sobriety tests, which she failed. Police said that during the tests, Northup told them she couldn’t do them “because I’ve had too much to drink.”
Northup was arrested at this point. An inventory of her car revealed a small film canister with marijuana and a smoking pipe.
Police said Northup consented to chemical breath tests. Police said these revealed blood alcohol levels of .125 at about 1:36 a.m. and .133 at about 1:38 a.m.
According to police, Northup was processed at police headquarters and then released at about 2:30 a.m.
