It rained for the first time in the 12 year history of the Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation 5K race, but while the numbers of runners and walkers were down, they still numbered in the hundreds on Sunday.

“We are always amazed and grateful to the number of people who turn out to support KDMF,” John and Meg DeCubellis said. “Each year the race has grown and with out all of the participants we would not be able to award scholarships, visit schools nation wide and most of all keep Katie’s memory alive.”

"We usually average around 500 runners, but with the weather we had between 350-400 today,” John said.

The event is a celebration of the life of Katie DeCubellis, a 13-year-old Narragansett girl who was tragically killed by a drunk driver on October 29, 1999. John and Meg, Katie’s parents, have since become outspoken advocates of responsible living.

The run got rave reviews from the participants.

“It was a lot of fun, especially because it was for a good cause,” said 20-year-old Tim Calcagni. The pre-med URI student from Bradford placed first overall, running the 5K in just 16:42.

This was also a winning weekend for 32-year-old Natalie Fish of Wakefield. She won two 5K’s this weekend, coming in first on Sunday as the first place woman in 20:08 and in first woman overall at 20:01 in the Matty Fund 5K at URI on Saturday.

“It was truly an honor running in memory of Katie and I hope to return next year,” Fish said.

The race began and ended at Narragansett High School, followed by awards, prizes and food.
