Participants of the South County Relay for Life found themselves at Old Mountain Field Friday night celebrating under tents, by the light of the luminaria, and with jubilation as they walked through to Saturday morning to raise money to help fight cancer.

Proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society, the "official sponsor of birthdays." Before the event, over $25,000 was raised, with more surely raised at the event itself.

"Fundraising doesn't stop," said Ryan Belmore, Community Executive of Development for the American Cancer Society's New England Division.

The overnight event saw 185 registered participants on 24 teams with 44 survivors, and it is estimated in total that over 200 individuals were at Old Mountain Field.

Relay for Life occurs overnight from 4pm to 10am the following day. This year marked the 15th Relay for Life in South County, "18 hours to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against cancer," according to Belmore.
