Police Log: Wrong Way Driver Charged With DUI
The following reports were provided by the South Kingstown Police Department and describe their actions from Wednesday, November 16 through the early morning hours of Friday, November 18. These reports do not indicate a conviction.
Gwendoline Woods, 62, of 2 Colony Rd. in Charlestown was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol with a BAC of .15 percent or greater on Wednesday, November 16 around 8:50 p.m. after a traffic stop on Route 1. Around 8:30 p.m. that night South Kingstown Police officers received a “Be On The Lookout” for a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1 near Matunuck Beach Road.
Officers continued to hone in on the vehicle’s location after dispatched received several 911 calls about the driver. The officers finally located the car, a black Mini Cooper stopped on the shoulder of Route 1 north facing southbound by Moonstone Beach Road, occupied by Woods. A Charlestown police officer was also on the scene, and assisted with the investigation.
The officers noted in their report that Woods appeared intoxicated based on several behavioral clues, and they asked her to take a series of field sobriety tests to which she agreed - after stating she was both coming from and going to Charlestown. When asked about driving on the wrong side of the highway, Woods stated: “I don’t believe that. All of those people were coming at me!”
Woods failed to perform the field sobriety tests to the satisfaction of the officers and was subsequently placed under arrest. A dog was also taken from her vehicle and secured at the South Kingstown pound. Woods was taken to SKPD, processed, and later released to the lobby with a Fourth District Court summons for December 1.
Arrests and Citations
Two 14-year-old South Kingstown females were arrested on Wednesday, November 16 on three counts of misdemeanor simple assault relative to an incident that occurred on Saturday, November 12 at the Curtis Corner Middle School. No further details regarding the case are available at this time.
Ronald Francis DuFour, 56, of 290 Church St. Apt. A3 in South Kingstown was arrested on Wednesday, November 16 around 9 a.m. on an active Fourth District Court bench warrant for failure to appear after he was located at the intersection of Church and High Streets. He was taken into custody, processed, and later transported to Fourth District Court for arraignment.
Scott B. West, 50, of 66 Sarasota Ave. in Narragansett was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol with an unknown BAC on Thursday, November 17 around 1:00 a.m. after a traffic stop on Route 1 southbound by the Dillon Rotary. The arresting officer noticed West’s truck accelerating onto the highway as he was positioned on stationary post nearby, quickly approaching 80 miles per hour before slowing down abruptly for the Dillon Rotary exit, and made the traffic stop soon after. West agreed to take a series of field sobriety tests, which he could not complete to the satisfaction of the officer. He was taken to SKPD, where he later refused a chemical test. He was processed and later released with a Fourth District Court summons for November 17.
Jean Y. Pion, 49, of 53 Karison St. Apt. 2 in South Kingstown was arrested on Thursday, November 17 around 12:15 p.m. on an active Fourth District Court bench warrant for failure to appear after he was located on Karison Street. He was taken to SKPD, processed, and later transported to Fourth District Court.
Ronald Grasso, 42, of 6101 Post Rd. Apt. 79 in North Kingstown was arrested on Thursday, November 17 in connection with a breaking and entering case that occurred in South Kingstown on October 31. Around 8 a.m. SKPD received word that Grasso was in North Kingstown Police custody after being found in possession of a stolen Sony digital camera. Detectives traveled to NKPD and found photos on the camera relative to the investigation, and took him back to SKPD for processing.
A 17-year-old South Kingstown female was arrested for misdemeanor simple assault on Thursday, November 17 around 3:15 p.m. after police received an in-station complaint from a Lighthouse For Youth employee that she had been assaulted by a client. The complainant stated that n argument had gotten physical, and the client had punched her in the back of the head and then slapped in the face.
Keven Salazar, 19, of 317 Carter Ave. in Pawtucket was arrested for possession of marijuana, driving in possession of marijuana, and driving with a suspended license on Friday, November 18 around 1:45 a.m. after a traffic stop on Tower Hill Road. The arresting officer observed the silver Honda Accord driven by Salazar heading southbound at approximately 73 miles per hour and initiated a traffic stop. The officer noted in his report that upon making contact with Salazar in his vehicle, he noted a strong odor of marijuana. Salazar voluntarily agreed to exit his vehicle and consent to a search of his person, which yielded six small baggies of suspected marijuana in addition to $580 in cash. The officers also searched two passengers of the car and the car itself, with negative results. A database query also returned that Salazar’s license was suspended. He was taken to SKPD, processed, and later released with a Fourth District Court summons for December 1. The suspected marijuana was seized as evidence.
Incidents
On Thursday, November 17 around 10:15 a.m. an officer was dispatched to the Broad Rock Road YMCA for a suspicious activity complaint. The officer arrived on the scene and spoke with two employees who stated that they observed a suspicious white male around the building with red hair and a red goatee, who eventually got into a Mercedes with Connecticut license plates and drove around slowly in the parking lot before leaving. Afterward, a patron of the YMCA stated he was missing two car keys. he car was later spotted at Hal’s Garage according to surveillance footage, where a man matching the description was seen purchasing gas with a stolen credit card from Narragansett. The officer relayed the information to Narragansett Police, and the investigation remains open.
On Thursday, November 17 around 6:00 p.m. an Uncle Sam’s Lane resident called to report that an unknown man had come to her door looking for her father, stating he was a State Police Trooper. The complainant stated the unknown man had knocked on the door an announced himself as “State Police”. The complainant opened the door and observed a white male, about 5’10”, wearing dark clothing and an orange traffic vest. She stated the man was very demanding for information about her father, and she added that she did provide his phone number. No police vehicle was noted anywhere near her house. The investigation remains open.
