Newport Love for American Idol Hopeful Erika Van Pelt

The Rhode Island native is currently one of the hit show's top 10 contestants.

As Rhode Island native continues to wow judges on American Idol, the singer's local family, friends and fans are doing whatever they can to support the 26-year-old's quest to become No. 1.

Newport resident Doug Pascua was spotted wearing this cowboy hat promoting Van Pelt at the Mall Laundromat around midday. Pascua said he has been a regular at Van Pelt's karaoke nights at the . Van Pelt, a South Kingstown native, has been hosting Tuesday night sessions at the Gas Lamp for years. She's also hosted sessions at and , and in South Kingstown, Kaubki, which is also hosting regular viewing parties.

A few weeks ago, Van Pelt's family distributed fliers around the city encouraging locals to vote for her on the show. Those fliers can now be seen in storefront windows around Newport.

Gas Lamp has been holding American Idol voting parties each week in Van Pelt's honor. Attendees receive discounts in exchange for votes.

About his hat, Pascua said he's just trying to do what he can to help his friend win.

"People say my hat's getting to be as famous as she is, though," he joked.

Van Pelt is currently in the Top 10 on American Idol. See her on the show this Wednesday at 8 p.m. on FOX.
