According to police, at about 12:20 a.m. an officer patrolling on Point Judith Road spotted a red Ford Focus make an illegal U-turn after driving past Burnside Avenue. A traffic stop was made on Jamestown Boulevard near Kingston Lane.

Police said a case of 24 Bud Light beers was visible on the back seat of the car. The driver – Smith – was not 21, and he was cited for the alcohol. A 22-year-old Block Island man and a 21-year-old Narragansett man were in the car with Smith, and said the beer was their’s.

Police said that of the 24 beers, eight were left. They were confiscated. Smith was released with a Fourth Division District Court summons for Jan. 31. He was also cited for the illegal U-Turn.

However, Smith was cited again on the night of Jan. 21, at about 8:20 p.m. An officer monitoring the parking lot of a Point Judith Road liquor store noted a red Ford Focus pull into the lot, with snow obscuring the back license plate.

The officer noted the passengers get out of the car, go inside the store and return with a container of beer and a brown paper bag. After the car left the store, a traffic stop was made on Jamestown Boulevard.

According to police, Smith had trouble finding his ID and registration, at which point the officer noticed the summons from his first citation earlier that day. This was used by police to verify his identity.

When asked by police about the newly-purchased alcohol in his car, Smith allegedly told them, “I have no excuses.” He was cited again for transportation of alcohol by a minor, and warned for the license plate violation.

Police confiscated a 12-pack of Bud Light beer, a bottle of unspecified vodka and a 22-ounce Newcastle beer. All three items were disposed of. A 22-year-old Hamden, CT man and a 21-year-old Narragansett man, unrelated to the two passengers from the first stop involving Smith, bought the alcohol found during the second stop.

URI Student Cited for Transportation of Alcohol by a Minor

Peter D. Bowen, 19, of 2 Thomas Drive, Cumberland, was cited at about 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 and charged with transportation of alcohol by a minor. Police said he is a student at the University of Rhode Island.

According to police, an officer traveling on Knowlesway made a traffic stop of a green Ford pick-up truck because its rear bumper was full of snow, obscuring the plate.

Police said that during the stop, a 12-pack of Blue Moon beer could be seen in the open bed of the truck. A background check confirmed that the driver – Bowen – was only 19.

The alcohol was confiscated, and Bowen was cited for transportation of alcohol by a minor. A 22-year-old Narragansett man was a passenger in the truck, and said the beer belonged to him.

CCRI Student Cited for Transportation of Alcohol by a Minor

Anthony W. Guglielmi, 20, of 9 Harvey Ave., East Providence, was cited at about 9:55 p.m. on Jan. 20 and charged with transportation of alcohol by a minor. Police said he is a student at the Community College of Rhode Island.

According to police, an officer patrolling traffic saw a Nissan make a turn on to Ocean Road from Knowlesway without using a signal. A traffic stop was made in front of Scarborough Beach adjacent to Elizabeth Drive.

Police said during the stop, an 18-pack of Miller beer was visible behind the passenger’s seat. A background check revealed that the driver – Guglielmi – was only 20, and he was cited for transportation of alcohol by a minor.

He was issued a Fourth Division District Court date of Jan. 31. The alcohol was confiscated and disposed of. According to police, a 21-year-old woman from Saratoga Spring, NY was also in the car with Guglielmi.
