Lemon the Duck Visits Narragansett

A story reading at Maury Loontjens Memorial Library includes a very special guest - an awesome duck named Lemon.

A very special guest made an appearance at Narragansett's Maury Loontjens Memorial Library on Thursday afternoon to share her story with local children.

Lemon, a disabled Pekin duck, along with her caring owner Laura Backman, traveled to South County for a reading of the children's book Lemon the Duck.

The book, written by Backman, focuses on Lemon's neurological disorder, which left her unable to stand or walk (although she can still swim with the best of them!). It follows Lemons struggles and perseverance, and Backman's process of finding a way to allow Lemon to be mobile again.

The ultimate solution was a contraption made from PVC piping, a harness and wheels. Lemon is able to sit in the harness and propel herself forward using her feet, and she vocally objects whenever she thinks she will be removed from her duck wheelchair.

The friendly and patient Lemon was happy to meet all of the children and let them all have a turn to pet her. Visitors also had the chance to do some arts and crafts, making ducks out of paper plates and real feathers that Lemon had shed during the story.

Backman and Lemon will continue to make appearances to share Lemon's story - a list of upcoming venues can be found on the Lemon the Duck website.
