Gusting Winds Lead to Delays, Ferry Cancellations

Thanks to wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour this morning, according to the National Weather Service, school districts in South County have delayed their start by one hour.

The high wind warning is in effect until 10 a.m. The NWS estimates constant wind speeds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 65, for all of Rhode Island and most of southern Massachusetts.

As a result, Narragansett, South Kingstown, Chariho and Westerly have all delayed the start of classes today by one hour as of 7 a.m. To keep up with updates on these and other delays, check out the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association site here.

Also, because of the high winds, all of the ferries to Block Island / New Shoreham have been cancelled today, according to the ferry’s Facebook page.

Finally, also from the NWS, there is a coastal flood warning in effect. High tide is from around 8 a.m. to midday. A general hazardous weather outlook is in effect for all of today, relating to issues from the wind and rain.

Of course, it’s also 54 degrees out, and it’s the last day of January. What gives? In case you’re curious, the record high for Jan. 31 is 62 degrees, set in 1988, according to Weather.com.
