Farmers Market Spices Things Up
Renowned Chefs Frank Terranova and Brandon Read Judge South Kingstown’s Local Recipe Cook Off.
Local resident Beth Iovino, owner of Mio Bags, the mind behind South Kingstown’s first Annual Recipe Cook Off on Saturday, wanted to drum up business for the Farmers Market and to make it a fun place to visit.
“Go big or go home," she said, "It's time to bring the fun to the market.”
Local residents and farmers shared their favorite recipe using locally grown products. The contest had dozen or so entries, and Iovino said one contestant was there early purchasing the ingredients before rushing home to make the dish.
People mulled about the market as the judges carefully examined all the contestants’ entries. They asked questions, took notes and then sat down for the final taste test.
First Place - Appetizer was awearded to Nina Fiascanaro for her grilled oysters with bacon and cayenne butter.
First Place - Entree went to Nina Fiascanaro for beef short ribs.
First Place - Side Dish was awarded to Fatima Lazar for vegetable couscous.
First Place - Dessert went to Suzanne Ferrio for her fruit and honey brulee.
The Grand Prize Winner was Jay Harding for “Phil's Eurasian Style Oxtail Stew.” His recipe will be featured at the May Farm Dinner at the Celestial Cafe in Exeter.
The Indoor Market is open Saturdays at PeaceDale Mill complex, 1425 Kingstown Road, Wakefield from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from November through April. Starting in May, the Market moves outdoors to URI's East Farm on Route 108 in Wakefield from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
