Contract Expected Tuesday for Interim Manager; Clarification on Story

A clarification to a statement made last week by Meg Rogers, plus, the council is expected to formally announce Richard Kerbel’s hiring Tuesday.

At its meeting Tuesday, the Narragansett Town Council is expected to formally announced a contract agree with new interim town manager Richard Kerbel.

As of 5:30 a.m. Friday, an agenda for Tuesday’s meeting hasn’t been posted, and Kerbel’s contract hasn’t been filed on Clerkbase. However, an executive session for a contract agreement was scheduled after last Monday’s meeting.

Kerbel is already listed as interim town manager on the town’s website, and he has been issued a town e-mail address.

For more on last week’s hiring, read a story from Derek Gomes of The South County Independent here. For more about Kerbel’s tenure in Providence, you can find The Providence Journal’s stories here.

The council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

After reading a story last week on Patch about the Narragansett Town Council choosing Richard Kerbel as its interim town manager, Meg Rogers wrote in to ask that we clarify one of the statements in that story.

Rogers clarified that when council president James Callaghan’s parents called residents, they did so in support for Callaghan’s motion for a new interim manager. They did not put Kerbel forward as a candidate specifically.

I would ask what the big rush with this hiring? This is a very high profile candidate with very questionable credentials. His track record is not impressive and has left a mess at every municipality he has been in charge of. I will continue to ask why the sudden departure from the Town of Coventry. Why all the problems in North Kingstown and certainly in Providence.......is Narragansett going to be another knotch on this guy's gun? If you hire him, you will regret it.

As a young resident in the town of Narragansett I would like to continue to live in this community as I grow older. However given Mr. Kerbel's track record in Providence, Coventry, and North Kingstown I'm not so sure I want to live here anymore if things progress down the path they have in the past communities that Mr. Kerbel has been employed in. It honestly pains me to see our elected officials who voted for this appointment sit up there and say he's "qualified". Yes, Mr. Kerbel holds many degrees and has worked hard to attain them but in the end of the day he has gotten three shots in other communities and failed miserably, just take a small peak at his resume(Providence, North Kingstown, Coventry). Plus it makes no sense appointing an interim town manager to replace another interim town manager when things are running smoothly... Wouldn't the council rather spend the time looking for another candidate with less baggage and past failures? Is Narragansett the next on the list?

You're right Steve but remember at the rate Narragansett goes through Town Managers you'll see another 20-30 of them in your lifetime.

True. But do we really want to get ourselves into one of these aforementioned messes? I feel like the council could find someone a lot less controversial that would give taxpayers a more comfortable feeling about the hiring.

I agree with you Steve, 100%. The council did find several qualified and less controversial candidates. Kerbel didn't even apply. Unfortunately, there is a majority in the council that doesn't care what taxpayers think. Kerbel will be around for a while and when they tire of him in a year or two he'll be gone with a nice Jack Welch style severance package.

This just shows that, we as residents, have failed to elect someone (talking about the council members that voted in favor of this hiring) that truly looks out for the interests of the taxpayers. Shame on us.

From the information that I am receiving on this guy, he has violated the town charter in North Kingstown in the year 2000 on a land sale without obtaining voter approval. Property that was undersold, thereby depriving the taxpayers a reasonable gain on the property, thereby holding off future property tax increases. There may be a connection with a former highly contraversial school supt from Nk regarding this sale. With the highly questionable behavior of this individual with the Providence fiscal mess and his sudden departure to Brighton, Mass., why would Narragansett suddenly become interested in this guy? I sense that he is soft on labor negotiations and as a police contract is due this year, and the town council is heavily democratic, you can see where this is all going. Also bear in mind that former Mayor Ciclline sister is a town council member! Do we see the connection yet?

Yes we see the connection. Reality: Callaghan wants to run for higher office; Town Council is a stepping stone for him on his way into the General Assembly; therefore, he will engratiate himself with those who want him to hire Ciccilline pal Kerbel. Is stinks to high heaven: but who gives a damn?

With all the problems in this town why on earth hire this guy.Narragansett politicians are becoming the joke of the state. All they had to do is not let Chief Hoxie be involved in police union negotiations.Hire someone else to over see it.Callaghan and Buonanno should have never got involved. It was the wrong thing to do it stinks to high heaven. Can we recall the council lol there awful

Yes, they are a huge joke in this state--however, THEY DO NOT KNOW THIS. Having known Jim and Judy our entire life, I still can't understand why they were placing those phone calls in order to get back at Glenna. Ask yourself one question: who on the Town Council watched the numbers and kept your taxes low: Wilkens and GLENNA... Jame is a great kid but thus far he has done a really lousy job at distancing himself from other Democrats pulling sleazy deals like hiring Kerbel. And Susan, do you really think people will buy into your line that you never "heard of" or "met" Kerbel? C'mon people... I am a retired state worker and a lifelong Democrat... my wife and I took a sign for James and worked the polls on election day... but now this?

I long for the old days of George, Jimmy and Brian... they make this Council look good.
As far as Dean goes, he is a good man who did the best he could...he got the shaft.
