Christmas Decorations Stolen from Award-Winning Home

The winners of a previous Patch holiday lights contest had their decorations stolen this year.

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the South Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

At about 7:29 a.m. on Dec. 2, police received a report of stolen Christmas decorations at 1991 Kingstown Road, the home of Donna and Wayne Rockwell.

Police said that according to the Rockwells, the decorations were stolen on the nights of Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, in two separate incidents. The stolen decorations included:

  • A four-foot blow-up Santa
  • A plastic light-up Santa
  • Two plastic candles
  • A three-foot fiber optic snowman
  • A soft plastic twinkle snowman with a black top hat and blue and red scarf
  • Various LED lights

The items were valued by the Rockwells at about $220, however, they noted that several of the decorations were no longer sold and thus irreplaceable.

Donna Rockwell told police that they believed URI students were involved, noting that a similar incident occurred about 15 years ago. They said they would also file a report with URI police.

Police said the incident remains open and under investigation.

Wayne Rockwell sent us the following e-mail about the incident:

My wife won the local Patch holiday yard decoration two years ago. She so loves to decorate the yard for all to see and enjoy. Unfortunately, she was extremely disappointed to find she had some of her decorations stolen on No. 30 and again on Dec. 1.

What a shame the thieves have ruined her holiday enjoyment and I am sure have disappointed many people in the process. We have now taken down all of the decorations and will not put them out again. This is very sad to say the least, I hope who ever is responsible is happy with themselves.

We have reported this to the South Kingstown Police as well as Narragansett and URI. We hope the people responsible are caught and are punished for this!
