[CHAT] URI Hosts SMU, Larry Brown

A coach on the rise in Danny Hurley meets a legend in Larry Brown on Saturday afternoon at the Ryan Center.

Join us shortly before 2 p.m. today as the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team hosts Larry Brown and Southern Methodist University.

The Rams are 2-7, and while some of the seven losses have been close, URI is coming off a 72-57 loss to in-state rival Providence College last week. In that game, even a depleted Providence roster was enough to bludgeon the Rams on the boards.

SMU, in contrast, has jumped out to an 8-1 record to begin the year. It’s currently the gaudiest out-of-conference record in Conference USA, but SMU hasn’t played a ranked opponent.

Here is why I do not attend URI basketball games, even though I am a proud Ram: because the men's basketball players are an embarrassment off the court! I don't care how they play, as long as they try their best. However, their grades and their poor behavior bring shame to our school and our state! I am pleased that the basketball player who illegally taped two women having sex (and then posted it to YouTube) was kicked off of the team and expelled from the school, but you don't hear about this type of behavior from our other sports teams! The URI Men's Basketball team needs to start ACTING LIKE MEN, not like a bunch of junior high school boys!

To be fair, there have also been arrests in the past year on the coaching staff of women's volleyball and among the players of the football team. So, it isn't just a basketball issue.
