Bon Vue Inn Hosts Hurricane Party

Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch returned to Narragansett for the Bon Vue's hurricane party last Friday.

In anticipating of Hurricane Irene, the Bon Vue Inn hosted a hurricane party on Friday with the return of Providence’s Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch.

Folks were flocking to Narragansett beaches, hoping to see the waves and have one last drink in town before the historic topical storm swept through the east coast. However, one could have sworn it was the off-season by the Bon Vue Inn. Few cars passed the beach bar and restaurant. Yet, inside the roots rock band, Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch, played new tracks from their much anticipated sophomore album.

Locals at the bar joked about going out to fish in the morning. Bar attendees spoke of plans to going to the Ocean Mist for last call, concerned that it may not be standing on Monday morning.

JBDF opened their set with a well-known cover, to warm up the dedicated crowd. They followed it up with their most well known song, “Probably Maybe,” which was featured on a national ad campaign for www.clearoncalories.org

Jeff and Dirty Finch will soon go into the studio to record their second album, but last week they debuted new songs from it. Like a new Radiohead album, Jeff and the gang has evolved immensely -- they have a crisper and cleaner sound and are attempting new things.

The debut album, Jeff Bryd, Dirty Finch echoes Wilco’s Summer Teeth. Their new material will not only remind someone of Wilco, but also Sparklehorse or the Jayhawks mixed in with the originality the band brings forth.

A Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch performance is a hurricane in its self, a fury of powerful songs and beauty that will blow you away. Jeff approaches the mic like a young man going in for his first kiss, passionate and heart felt. The band’s stage performance is also intimate, since they line the stage with lamps and string lights to create a feeling of complete relaxation, even with Bon Vue’s television silently aired weather reports and live footage from the fearless Irene.

Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch is not a band to miss. They sound exactly like their studio recordings and play for at least two hours. They integrate their set with outstanding original songs with flawless covers. Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch covered the Traveling Willburys that evening. With your back turned you could have sworn the supergroup was back from the dead and playing at the Bon Vue.

Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch is one of the finest indie folk bands out of the state. You can catch them locally in East Greenwich at the Grille on Main on Sept. 10.
