5 THINGS: Reading, Walking, Cruising and Trolley-ing
It’s a very “ing” day, as there is plenty to do in South County.
Here are the (more than) Five Things for Wednesday, August 8, 2012:
Mr. Rogers approves. Ever wanted to take a trolley tour? Why not make it a historic one of Narragansett? They start at 10 a.m. today, and admission is $10.
Or maybe walking is more of your speed. If so, there is a historic walking tour of South Ferry at 10:30 a.m. This one is free, since, you know, you’re using your own legs (presumably).
Teehee! The name of this event in Charlestown is simply “Of Fairies, Gnomes and Elves.” It starts at 10:30 a.m. I shall say no more, except that I think it’s a horrible idea that Peter Jackson is making The Hobbit into a three-part movie.
Stories for young and old! There is a story time for kids ages 3 to 5 at Peace Dale Library at 10:30 a.m. But if you’re significantly older than that, but still young at heart, the South Kingstown Senior Center has its book discussion group at the same time. There is also the afternoon book club at Maury Loontjens Memorial Library in Narragansett, and newsflash, it meets in the afternoon, at 1 p.m. And finally, appropriately, the finale of the South Kingstown teen summer reading program is 2:30 p.m. at Peace Dale Library.
Other senior services. There are two more senior groups meeting today. The South Kingstown Veterans Group meets at the South Kingstown Senior Center at 11 a.m. There is also a caregiver support group at the Center at 1:15 p.m.
Insert blood pun here. There is a blood drive at DeWal Industries on Ray Trainor Drive in Narragansett at 2 p.m.
“I love acting. It is so much more real than life.” – Oscar Wilde. The Contemporary Theatre Company is offering acting classes at 5 p.m. The cost is $10.
Cruising but not for bruisings. It is Cruise Night at Aunt Carrie’s in Narragansett, starting at 5 p.m. This refers to classic cars, and not those trips Kathie Lee used to hawk. Check out some classic cars and class clamcakes.
DANGER WILL ROBINSON! Starting in early September, we’re going to be phasing out the adding of new calendar events by our staff. This means that if you’re from a group or organization, you’ll have to start doing them yourself. It’s pretty simple, though! While logged into your Patch account, just go here. Adding your event ensures it’ll show up in searches, and be eligible for me to give it shout-outs in Five Things.
Sign up for our daily newsletter! Hey, I realize we have a lot of neat features and knick-knacks on the site, so it can be confusing to keep up with it all. Want just one simple, easy to read daily digest? Sign up for our e-mail newsletter here then. It comes out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. roughly, every single day of the week. Amazing, I know!
I heard that their chef had abandoned the battle to make chocolate moose. On this day in 1220, Sweden was defeated by Estonian tribes in the Battle of Lihula.
How’d you convince people to call you that anyway? Happy 51st birthday to David Howell Evans, a.k.a. The Edge, guitarist for U2. He is not to be confused with Adam Copeland, a.k.a. former WWE champion Edge.
