5 Things: Love, Liquor And Labor

Five things to know today in SK, Feb. 13, 2012

1. Show some love. Gear up for Valentine's Day tomorrow and give your kids a creative outlet to share their love with friends and classmates. Kids of all ages are invited to the Drop-In Valentine Craft at the Robert Beverly Hale Library, 2601 Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry Hwy, Wakefield, to show their Valentine creativity today at 1 p.m.

2. The Town Council will meet today at 7:30 p.m. The council will hold a public hearing on an application by the Matunuck Oyster Bar to expand its liquor-service area to include an outdoor patio and an additional 40 seats.

The council will also hear several communications from residents about its Jan. 23 decision to grant the Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce tax-exempt status for one year.

A work session will be held prior to the meeting at 6:45 p.m. For the full agenda, click here.

3. Get your business ready for the summer rush this year. If you are interested in learning about a seasonal help recruitment program, check out a 90-minute informational seminar on the J-1 Visa Program for hiring international employees.

The federal requirements for hiring international workers have changed.  Come and find out how the program can fit your hiring needs. The event is sponsored by the United Chamber of Southern RI at 1 p.m. at Arturo Joe's, 140 Point Judith Rd, Narragansett.

4. Looking for some action? Get your fix and support local high school athletics at one of today's games. Check out the full schedule for today's South Kingstown High School and Prout School games here.

5. Monday will be mostly sunny, although it will get a little windy with gusts peaking at 25 mph. Clouds and colder temperatures will roll in after sunset.

Why do employers hire J-1 students?
* you save on payroll taxes; no FICA or FUTA taxes
* pre-paid health insurance for all participants
* all seasonal employees have a good command of English
* enriching, culturally diverse working environment in your business
