5 Things: Route 138, PTO and Pricipals

South Kingstown Patch has five things you need to know to get going after your three-day weekend.

Here are five things that will get you back on your feet on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012:

1. If you've driven in Kingston Village, chances are you've been caught in traffic there too. A state Department of Transportation reconstruction project on Route 138 could soon make that traffic a thing of the past.

The Route 138 Reconstruction Project Area Committee will meet at 4 p.m. at the Town Hall, 180 High St., South Kingstown.

The 11-member committee composed of residents, town and URI staff will meet with public safety personnel and project engineers to discuss traffic and safety concerns under the proposed plan. Kingston Fire District Chief Nathan Barrington will discuss his concerns that proposed reconstruction designs could delay public safety response times. A copy of a letter by Barrington to Stephen Alfred, town manager, is attached.

The Recreation Committee will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the Neighborhood Guild, 325 Columbia St., Wakefield.

The committee will vet next year's budget and discuss capital projects. Click here to view the agenda.

2. Get a ride, don't drink and drive. URI students might soon have themselves a safer way to travel through South Kingstown to popular Narragansett bars. The state Superior Court upheld a ruling on Jan. 9 to award a common carrier certificate of public convenience and necessity to Rogue Island Jitney.

The shuttle service will safely taxi students from URI's campus to area bars on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights during the fall and spring semesters.

3. The Rebels hit the courts again today. Head over to the high school gymnasium, 215 Columbia St., Wakefield, today for the boys' varsity game against Central High School at 7 p.m.

The junior varsity teams face off in the gym at 5:15 p.m.

The Prout School's boys' varsity team also plays today. The team will take on Middletown High School at 5 p.m. in an away game, 130 Valley Road, Middletown.

4.  Shake hands with the new principal at Curtis Corner Middle School, Patricia Aull. Parents can head over at 7 p.m. for refreshments and a chance for some face time with the middle school's latest leader. A Parent-Teacher Organization meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the school's library, 301 Curtis Corner Road, Wakefield.

5. Last night's flurries thawed into a rainy morning with temperatures climbing into the 40s. Expect rainy weather to last throughout the evening.
